You can hide any or all of the Modules on the Site by clicking the "-" icon on the left panel above the Main Menu. Clicking the "+" will expand them all again. You can also click on the name of any of the Modules to hide just them! So if you don't need to see the Syndicate or (gasp!) the Donation Modules for example, just click on their Title, it is usually in Gold and will appear as a link now! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SYNCHRONICITY: AN INTUITIVE WINK FROM THE COSMOS Just when you think you're at an impasse - voila! A door! And the universe provides a key! ~ Meg Lundstrom Is it only, as skeptics suggest, selective perception and the law of averages playing itself out? Or is it, as Carl Jung believed, a glimpse into the underlying order of the universe? He coined the term synchronicity to describe what he called the "acausal connecting principle" that links mind and matter. He said this underlying connectedness manifests itself through meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect. Such synchronicities occur, he theorized, when a strong need arises in the psyche of an individual. He described three types that he had observed: the coinciding of a thought or feeling with an outside event; a dream, vision or premonition of something that then happens in the future; and a dream or vision that coincides with an event occurring at a distance. No one has come up with a definition that has superseded his, although there has been debate on whether events linked to precognition and clairvoyance should be included as synchronicity. Whatever its cause, the appeal of synchronicity runs deep. "People love mysterious things, and synchronicity is like magic happening to them," says Carolyn North, author of Synchronicity: The Anatomy of Coincidence (Regent Press). "It gives us a sense of hope, a sense that something bigger is happening out there than what we can see, which is especially important in times like this when there’s so many reasons for despair." If we eliminate Jung’s two psi-related definitions and just focus on the coinciding of inner and outer events in a way that defies causal explanation, there can still be an overlapping, because the inner event can be an intuitive hit. In practice, synchronicity and intuition sometimes seem so intertwined that it’s hard to tell where one leaves off and the other begins. “There’s something about turning one’s choices over to intuition that seems to avail oneself to synchronicity," says Allan Combs, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville who co-authored Synchronicity: Science, Myth and the Trickster (Marlowe). "In practice, that can mean moving from moment to moment when making decisions, even small decisions -- especially small decisions! If you expect the unexpected, synchronicity will emerge." Intuition, researchers have found, flourishes in a person who is open, receptive and nonjudgmental. Synchronicity has had little research -- it defies laboratory tests, of course -- but people who have studied the topic report a phenomena which Alan Vaughan, author of Incredible Coincidence: The Baffling World of Synchronicity (Ballantine) calls "the synchronicity of synchronicity." Just having an active interest in the matter seems to make synchronicities happen more often -- in part, of course, because we notice them more. "Synchronicity seems to happen when you’re intensely caught up in something that’s very deep -- for instance, falling in love makes it pop all over the place," says Combs. "A lot of activities that tap into the deep mystery of life -- things like meditation, contemplative prayer -- also seem to stir it up." Synchronicities are sometimes regarded as signs, and some people consciously use them to make decisions in life. There are no accidents in life - whatever happens, happens for a reason. That is not to say that we always know what the reasons are behind each and every event that happens in our lives - we do not, but our Higher Selves are aware of the "big picture," or greater plan for us. Sometimes we will have a glimmer of recognition when a part of our life plan starts to unfold. For example, in my own life, when I was in college on the first day of a new semester, in met a student who struck me as "special" in some way. I just KNEW that she would become important in my life, but I was not sure exactly how this would all unfold. Sure enough, she was the one who eventually introduced me to the man who would become the producer of my first music project, which forever changed my life in a most important way. Was this all just a coincidence? No, because the universe doesn't work in a coincidental manner, but in a synchronistic one. By knowing that the universe works in a meaningful fashion, you are able to watch for signs that may arise to guide you through any challenge or question that you may have. Sometimes by simply driving along, with a question on your mind, you will hear something on the radio, or see a certain bumper sticker that gives you the answer to your question. There are always signs in front of you, given by the universe, to let you know what you need to do next, if you are aware enough to watch for them. Sometimes an animal will appear as a sign to guide you, such as a bird that just "happens" to be flying near you, perhaps showing you that everything's going to be okay. When I was riding to the hospital to deliver my first child, I was in pretty hard labor, and my mind was racing with worried thoughts that I wouldn't make it in time! Just then, a Stevie Wonder song came on the radio (I will never forget this), and he was singing, "Don't you worry 'bout a thing." I realized at that point that everything was going to be fine - and it was! The reason that synchronicity works is that we, as humans, are a part of the universe, and a part of nature - there is no separation between a human being and, for example, a tree, in reality. We are all made of the same "stuff" - and being intimately connected as we are to everything else, be it a rock or an elephant, we are able to tap into the guidance and wisdom that is available to us by simply keeping our eyes and ears open. Some people receive their guidance by overhearing conversations of strangers while standing in a supermarket check-out line! There is no limit to what we can learn from the synchronistic signs of the universe. Meeting special people in your life, and finding your dream job are examples of synchronicity in action. Do you really believe that your life's partner comes to you by accident, by a strange coincidence? Knowing that the universe works with meaningful events, instead of accidental ones, can help you to realize that each special person who comes along, comes into your life for a reason - sometimes with a lesson to teach you, and sometimes to bring you profound love. Stories abound regarding the mysterious "coincidences" about how people find their dream jobs. Marina Sirtis, the fine actress who played Deanna Troi on Star Trek, the Next Generation, was heading out the door to fly back to England when, at that VERY MOMENT, she received the phone call that landed her the role of a lifetime, and changed the direction of her life. Coincidence? I think not. One very interesting byproduct, if you will, of being on the spiritual path is that your synchronistic experiences will increase, quite remarkably so. You will think of someone, and she will call you on the phone or you will run into her soon after. Circumstances that you are trying to develop in your life, such as certain goals or desires, will be aided by "coincidental" events, very much like magic.
